ear ReaderIn 2017 we celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the independent Hungarian Official Statistical Service. Károly Keleti was appointed on 25 May 1867 head of the Statistical Section, which then operated within ministerial framework. Thus the independent Hungarian Official Statistical Service was established. On the occasion of this Jubilee it is a pleasure to introduce the latest volume of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office's time-traveUing publication, the Statistics of Centuries - Statistical curios in Hungarian history, to guide us on a journey through the last centuries based on statistical or statistics-like data.Our founder Károly Keleti, together with other illustrious Hungarian statisticians, left us with a significant amount of knowledge and experience throughout the past 150 years, enriching our national values and cultural heritage. Statistics-like data and facts have been observed even before official statistics was formed. Moreover, this activity was carried out by scholars of different disciplines, led by historians. For this reason, when reviewing the past centuries we have applied the results of disciplines other than statistics as well.It is difficult to provide a comprehensive overview about the social, economic, scientific and spiritual life of a long historical period. Hence, our publication presents only the most important and most relevant data based on documents of each respective era. We gathered facts which, besides being important in their own time, had a prevailing influence over a long period, occasionally lasting even to our days. The publication is illustrated with graphs and maps so that the reader can learn from a glance from chapters: The millennium in brief.
