Foreword
The principles and the mechanics of system dynamics were first worked out in the 1940's and 1950's. Since then the technique has been used to understand such diverse problems as technical obsolescence, urban decay, drug addiction, commodity price fluctuation, environmental deterioration, and population growth. The literature of system dynamics applications now comprises more than 12 books and many dozens of papers published with translations into as many as 26 languages. System dynamics groups are active in Japan, the United States, and several East and West European countries.
Over the past two decades there has also been significant expansion in the teaching programs and materials devoted to system dynamics. Degree programs emphasizing this methodology are now available in several universities, and several introductory textbooks have been published. In addition, the system dynamics faculties at M.I.T, and Dartmouth have developed a wealth of course materials to describe, illustrate, and provide practice in the application of simple dynamic principles to real and interesting problems. Study Notes In System Dynamics presents in one place and in standard format many of these materials.
No one book can provide a comprehensive introduction to the total set of procedures and rules required to understand the behavior of complex systems. Indeed, theoretical understanding is still growing
