Die „Sinfonia eroica", komponiert im Jahre 1804, wurde im Januar 1805 in Wien zum erstenmal aufgeführt. Sie war Napoleon Bonaparte, Beethovens Heldenideal, zugedacht. Eine Abschrift dos Autographs, die als Druckvorlage diente (im Besitz derGesellscbaft der Musikfreunde in Wien), zeigt auf dem eingerissenen, energisch durchradierten Titelblatt noch Spuren dieser Wid-mnng. Beethoven zerriß sie im Zorn, als die Nachricht von der Kaiserproklamation des von ihm als Republikaner verehrten Napoleon eintraf. Die imWiener, Verlag für Kunst und Industrie" im Jahre 1806 erschienene Erstausgabe trägt den Titel: The"SinfoniaEroica", composed in 1804, and first performed in Vienna in Jannary 1805, had been dedicated originally to Napoleon B • aparte whom Beethoven worshipped as the idolof his time. A copy of the manuscript, from which the work was engraved, and which is now in the possession of the "Society of Friends of Music", Vienna, still shows evidence of the original dedication, though much erased and mutilated. The enraged Beethovon tore it to pieces when he received the news that Napoleon had betrayed his republican principles and proclaimed himself emperor. The first edition of the symphony, published in 1806 by the "Verlag furKunst und Industrie" bears the following title: „Sinfonia eroica a due Violini, Alto, due Flanti, due Oboi, due due Clarini, Timpani e basso, compoata per feteggiare il s e dedicata A Sua Altezza Serenissima il Principe di Lobkowitz No. Ill delle Sinfonie." La „sinfonie eroica0 composée en 1804, fut jouée pour la premiere fois a Vienne en janvier 1805. Elle était dédiée a Napoléon Bonaparte, le héros idéal de Beethoven. Une copie du manuscrit (appartenant a la société des amis de la musique a Vienne) porte encore sur la premiere page, un peu déchirée, les traces de cette dédicace, énergiquement effacée. Beethoven, fen cclere, la déchira quand il eut la nouvelle, que Napoléon, qu'il avait admiré comme républicain, s'était fait proclamer empereur. Sie würde sonst, wenn der Zuhörer von dem Vorhergegangenen bereits ermüdet ist, von ihrer Wirkung verlieren.")
