Introducing Tenerife
The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is also the most attractive and diverse. Dominated by the snowcapped volcano of Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain at a height of 3718m (12,199ft), the island also has pine forests, deep ravines or barrancos, banana plantations, towering cliffs and arid semi-desert areas reminiscent of North Africa. Bathed by warm Atlantic waters, freshened by the trade winds and blessed by almost perpetual sun, Tenerife has been described as the 'land of eternal spring'. Little wonder that it has become a year-round tourist destination.
Tourists flock to the drier south of the island, where purpose-built resorts such as Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos provide entertainment, nightlife, theme parks and reliable sunshine. The steady wind and impressive waves make this an ideal area for water sports such as windsurfing and sailing. Hikers, on the other hand, prefer the centre and north of Tenerife, where there is a wide network of country paths. On the north of the island stands the more sedate resort of Puerto de la Cruz, surrounded by old towns and luxuriant vegetation. Many visitors spend a day in the capital city and port of Santa Cruz. It was here that Admiral Nelson lost his arm in a naval battle.
Tenerife also has its historical towns. Just to the west of Santa Cruz is La Laguna, the site of the main university of the Canary Islands. Further west is La Orotava, with a fine collection of historical buildings and craft centres. It is set in a broad attractive valley that was much admired by Alexander von Humboldt (see panel, page 67).
