'But I meant (said he) to have done more9 On 6 February 2005, the town of Kirkcaldy in Scotland played host to one of the famous men of modern times, the chairman of the United States central bank or Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan. Greenspan, who in saving the US economy from its decennial excesses in the 1980s and 1990s enjoyed a reputation unequalled in modern fináncé, had come to the windy shore of pubs, chapels and housing schemes on the Firth of Forth to praise its most famous native, the philosopher Adam Smith. In attendance, along with the Provost and bailies, was the British fináncé minister or Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown. Brown had grown up in Kirkcaldy, where his father had been minister at the Presbyterian Church of St Bryce. He was Member of Parliament for the town. He had lately been promoting Adam Smith as the patron of his version of a reformed Scottish socialism, and hoped to win Greenspan to his cause.
