Chapter 1The peaks of the Allegheny Mountains were invisible, lost in the murky dawn and soiled cloud cover. Large, moist snow flakes fell steadily and without sound, covering the rotting, exhaust-stained mounds of snow alongside the highway. It was the first snow of the new year.A big tandem diesel was the only vehicle on the six-lane highway for a quarter of a mile in either direction. Its engine rumbled in the stillness. The beating windshield wipers built ridges of snow at the ends of their arcs. The sleepy driver yawned, lifted himself slightly from the seat, and tugged through his pants at his shorts, which had ridden up and were binding his crotch.
