AFTER THE CLOCK STRIKES TWELVE Ali the clocks are discussing midnight. And we seem to know it. It makes us uneasy. What happens when today becomes tomorrow? What happens after the clock strikes twelve? Tomorrow is shrouded in mystery. And we like only those mysteries that we can solve. We are resentful that the future is securely locked from our view. Wq are bent on breaking the lock! History stops dead still with the present moment. It has no choice. It can write no more. But we don't want to stop there. We want to go on. Something within us wants to open every door that is marked 'No Admittance'. This generation is at war with barriers. We have determined to overturn them, to walk the ground that is off limits, to discover the secrets that have so long been denied us. The most persistent barrier of all - the one most unyielding - is the barrier of death. Ever since the day when death first coldly introduced itself to this planet, men and women have been prying the locks. Everybody wants to know what is on the other side! True, we may ignore the subject - when we're young. We don't care about the future when it seems to stretch endlessly ahead of us. But when death comes down our street, and turns in at our drive, and takes someone we love, or heads straight for us - suddenly we are frantic for answers! But this preoccupation with death ought not to surprise us. There's a reason for it. Picture yourself as a stranger from outer space, on a cosmic guided tour. Coming this way.
