'Ship ahoy! Ship ahoy!'
The traditional call from one ship to another echoed across the lonely waves of the Atlantic Ocean. No reply came from the brig that had been hailed. She was sailing with only a few sails set and was steering wild.
'Look out for her name,' called Captain Morehouse of the Dei Gratia as the brig which they had sighted came closer. Her stern swung into view on the crest of a wave, and the crew could just make out her name: Mary Celeste. 'Lower a boat and board her,' Morehouse ordered his mates.
