Foreword
This trilogy is the reworking of the unpublished work The City's Identity Redeemed, Theology of Nation and City by the same author, which was edited by Dr William L Lane. Author and editor agreed that splitting the nnaterial into a trilogy, while adding recent research and experience, was a better way to make this important material public. Dr William L Lane passed away in the spring of 1999. His original foreword has been edited by the publisher according to the original meaning to fit in with the new ordering of the material.
It is imperative to recognize the 'prophetic' character of the city. Cities are designed to lead the nations. Not only education, politics and communication are increasingly international and urbanized, but also the labor market and refugee 'market.' Soon half the world's population will be urbanized, but more alienated than ever: international tensions aggregate in giant cities.
Cities are trendsetters and taboo-breakers. They are like spiritual capitals of society, like the mountaintops in the sea of nations, God's intention is that good should come out of the Cities. The apostle Paul once commented,
