Penguin Books The State of the Art Born in Nowra, New South Wales, Frank Moorhouse has lived for many years in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, a place he has affectionately fictionalized. He has worked as a journalist in Sydney and as an itinerant editor of country newspapers and was, for a time, editor of the Australian Worker. He has written fiction and commentary on politics and Australian life for the National Times and the Bulletin and has scripted the films Between Wars, Conference-ville and The Disappearance of Azaria Chamberlain. He has travelled in the United States, United Kingdom, parts of Europe, India and around Australia, reporting and giving readings of his work. His interests include bush-walking and night clubs. He has published six books of stories: Futility and Other Animals, The Americans, Baby, The Electrical Experience, Conference-ville, Tales of Mystery and Románcé and The Everlasting Secret Family and Other Secrets; and one nonfiction book: Days of Wine and Rage.
