Foreword
It was only after long and intense deliberation that I decided to write thb report on the background to the world-wide phenomenon of unidentified flying objects.
It is a subject which arouses highly conflicting emotions and any discussion of it can only provide fuel for these conflicts. There can be no other theme which is so thoroughly beset by prejudice and supjwsition, by doubts and overstatements, falsifications and even intrigue.
'It is a subject on which there can be no compromise, only the two extremes of for and againsti
There are innumerable accounts from all over the world of confrontations with unidentified flying objects. According to one survey, in America ^lone some 15 million people - including President Jimmy Carter - claim to have seen U.F.O.s. Such a phenomenon deserves our attention, however we care to categorize it. And as it is a writer's task to seek out the truth, this is the object which I have set myself here.
The search for truth in such a field as this is inevitably full of dangers; it is a test of courage for both author and reader. For the author it demands a willingness to reveal the truth once he has discovered it, and for the reader, a willingness to set aside his preconceived ideas. j oh ann es von B uttlar
