AUTHOR'S NOTE It has been the expressed hope of many that I would write a preface to the published text of Tiny Alice, clarifying obscure points in the play-explaining my intention, in other words. I have decided against creating such a guide because I find-after reading the play over-that I share the view of even more people: that the play is quite clear. I will confess, though, that Tiny Alice is less opaque in reading than it would be in any single viewing. One further note: this printed text of Tiny Alice represents the complete play. Somé deletions-mainly in the final act-were made for the New York production; and while I made the deletions myself, and quite cheerfully, realizing their wisdom in the particular situation, I restore them here with even greater enthusiasm.
