The tortoise is in many senses a much misunderstood creature. Because tortoises do not show any obvious signs of emotion or distress people are often ready to infer that they are totally insensitive. This lack of understanding can only harm the welfare of tortoises in they are often treated as mere objects and not infrequently die while relatively young.This book is intended to guide the tortoise owner to a better understanding of his pet and its needs and requirements. Special mention is made of the more exotic species which are sometimes preferred to the common varieties they require intensive care and attention if they are to be kept healthy and active, having to be kept warm all the year round and fed on a specially balanced diet.Turtles and terrapins are also becoming increasingly popular as pets, and their special requirements are detailed along with a brief account of the more common species.
