Foreword The object of this book is to acquaint the reader with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and its work towards the harmonization and unification of the law of international trade. Its intended audience are persons with an interest in international trade law who wish to learn about the background, organization and functioning of UNCITRAL and about the activities of the Commission in this field, as well as those seeking detailed information about particular texts emanating from the work of the Commission. Persons with interests in the structure and functioning of international organizations and in the role of such organizations in the international harmonization and unification of law should also find it of value. The book is designed to be of use to scholars, practitioners and researchers, as well as to those with more general interests. Part one of the book gives an account of the origin and mandate of the Commission and describes its organization. It also discusses the Commission's work programme, its methods of work, and its activities other than substantive work on topics within its work programme. The substantive work of the Commission on topics within its programme of work is described in part two. This part also provides information on actions taken by the General Assembly with respect to projects completed by the Commission, and on diplomatic conferences convened by the General Assembly that have adopted conventions based upon draft texts prepared by the Commission. The textual material in parts one and two contains liberal references to basic documents and other source material in order to assist researchers and others seeking further information about the subjects discussed. Unless otherwise indicated, documents referred to by document numbers are documents of the United Nations. Where relevant, references are given to the volumes of the Yearbook of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, which contain reproductions of documents. References to the Yearbook are given in brackets as [Yearbook 19 . .]. The annexes contain legal texts and other material emanating from the work of UNCITRAL, including texts that have been adopted in final form by the Commission and conventions adopted by diplomatic conferences on the basis of draft texts prepared by the Commission. Also reproduced in the annexes is material related to the Commission's work, such as the resolution of the General Assembly that established the Commission and set forth its mandate, and other relevant resolutions of the General Assembly.
