FOREWORD
After a great many years of priestly work, mainly in Britain, it is now my luck or lot or fate to travel to many different parts of the world. In recent years I have worked for months in Spain and Italy, have visited India, have spent a year and a half in the United States. This particular book was started during the record blizzard in Chicago last January, I type this in Bournemouth, England but, by the time that the book is published, I should be in New Zealand or Australia.
My work in recent years has been more and more restricted and I am now serving continuously as a director of retreats. In such a role I have been brought in touch with thousands of men and women on both sides of the Atlantic, men and women who have shared my own misgivings at the seeming instability of our present civilization and my ovm doubts and questions about supernatural faith.
It is to greet and encourage my friends that I have once more sought the help and experience of an old acquaintance, Henry Dawes. Henry helped me greatly with my first book. We Neurotics, for then, as now, his efforts towards holiness mirrored my own moods.
