Preface The Purpose-This book is designed to accomplish two objectives at the same time. The student will learn how to use a full-featured word processor while alsó learning how to write a research paper that is prepared according to one of four commonly-used style manuals. The Text's Approach-The text is organized so that the student produces a research paper while learning the features of the word processor. For example, the fourth chapter describes how the student enters and edits text. The student is then directed to type in a section of a term paper that is given as an example. The term paper that is used in this text is an actual freshman paper that was prepared by the son of one of the authors. The fifth chapter describes methods of setting margins, indents and alignment. The student edits these aspects of the text in accordance with one of the major style manuals. In the sixth chapter, the student adds citations and reference lists to the paper. The final chapter shows the student how to illustrate the paper with tables, charts, and imported graphics. This approach provides the student with a reference book that can be used to produce future college papers. Since it is not appropriate to include all of the important word processing features in a single paper, the authors have found it necessary to include topics that do not directly apply to the student paper. These sections are supported by exercises at the end of each chapter. The Main Features of the Text-Each chapter of the text begins with an outline and ends with a summary, a glossary, topics for further research and exercises. Style manuals-The style manuals that are referred to in this book are: The APA Publications Manual American Psychological Association (1994). Publication Manual ofthe American Psychological Association (4th ed.). Washington, DC: Author. This manual was devised in 1928 by psychologists and anthropologists to help standardize manuscripts sent to journals. It is still used for that purpose, but has been expanded to include term papers, theses, and dissertations. The APA manual is used in a wide rangé of fields, from the social sciences to many education schools. A new edition, published in the late summer of 1994, is taking the place of the 3rd edition. This newer edition covers somé of the capabilities of word processors. It alsó has an appendix covering variations in the guidelines for students writing dissertations, theses, and student papers.
