PROLOGUE This first volume of the English language ENCYCLOPAEDIA HUNGARICA, EH2, is based on work during the past quarter century by persons in Hungary, and Hungarian emigrants settled in the four comers of the world, hundreds of whom became dedicated supporters and unpaid volunteer co-workers of the Encyclopaedia project. That work occurred in what we will classify as three phases: 1. the First or Initial Phase,- 1999, organized and directed by László Bagossy as Editor-in-Chief and dealing with the creation and publication of the Hungarian language Encyclopaedia Hungarica, [0911]*. 2. the Second or Mid Phase, 1999 - 2004, under the direction of Rev. Dr. József Pungur as Chair of the Editorial Committee, and concerned with translation for, and preparation of the proposed English language version of the Encyclopaedia, originally planned as a translation of an abridged version of EHl. 3. the Third or Final Phase, 2005 - present, plarmed and directed by Prof. Dr. Peter G. Glockner as Editor and Nora Bagossy Varga as Associate Editor, and dealing with the preparation and publication of EH2, with all work carried out by this editorial team. A key and indispensable person of this phase was the Associate Editor who as Chief Co-Worker of the Mid Phase was intimately familiar with all details of the translation work and where and how it was stored and could be retrieved. Without her there would be no EH2. In this Prologue only the Final Phase is discussed while a brief history of the other two phases is given in the next Section. This first volume of EH2 contains EHl articles selected for translation by the Editor-in-Chief from Sections A - G in Volumes 1 and 4 of EHl. It also includes selected articles from other alphabetical Sections for which the first letter in their translated titles is in the range A-G. They constituted the start-up content of each Section with the initial lists of articles compiled by the Associate Editor. Additional articles were selected from Sections A-G of EHl, including all material dealing with Hungarian immigrant settlements in the world, the so-called colonies, the treatment of which gave recognition to the early, average settler's pioneering struggles in establishing a home in foreign and often hostile environments, and building churches, schools and social centers, á la Jenő Ruzsa [0910a]. It was those descriptions which gave EHl a unique flavor, which was to be maintained or re-captured. All additional articles selected from EHl were translated by the Editor and Associate Editor. A limited number of new articles were written in this phase for which the contents in most cases were conveniently obtainable from the INTERNET and other sources. All translated articles were carefully scrutinized for accuracy of translation and edited to achieve imiformity in style.
